Rectangular profile tape is the same thickness across the width of the tape, no matter where you measure it.  Triangular profile tape is the specified thickness in the center or middle of the tape's width, and tapers in thickness toward each side (the taper has a known thickness specification).

Generally speaking, both tapes can be used for any suitable application - however, rectangular tapes will not cone under the pressure of back-shell clamps on connectors. Triangular tapes have a guideline stripe running down the middle of the tape (the color of the guideline indicates the tape's thickness without having to measure - handy when using multiple thickness tapes in an application) to aid in spiral wrapping the tape when used in cable joining or repair applications. Either tape can be used for both applications. Triangular tape results in a smoother surface finish in spiral wrap applications.
